Sometimes people say to me, “Keith, isn’t Gawker just like Spy, the magazine that bravely took on the media elite during the late 1980s and kept people honest and the phonies in check until its fearless founders went on to careers at New York, the New Yorker, and Vanity Fair?”
And I say to those people, who live inside my head, Yes, Gawker is a lot like Spy, and its claims to being a fearless exposer of phonies are equally valid.
Here is a great essay on Spy, and another magazine from that era, Manhattan inc., from an old issue of Dissent. A crack team of interns scanned it especially for this tumblr. Fittingly, since Dissent is slightly to the left, you will have to crane your head slightly to the left to read this.
